THE HISTORY OF PETER GREEN
Peter Green Furnishers began life in 1956 as a bed shop on Leigh Road in Eastleigh. Sixty-four years later, we still have a huge selection of beds and bedroom furniture, but we also are very well known for our living, dining and occasional furniture and a huge selection of flooring. We are still family owned, our Chairman, Wendy Martin-Green is the daughter our founder Peter Green. As always we proudly continue to serve the South and Isle of Wight with many customers who travel from even farther afield to enjoy the Peter Green commitment to value, service and price! In 1956 Peter Green started his first furniture business in the small, railway town of Eastleigh. His ‘Sleep Shop’ was located at 43 Leigh Road, almost opposite the bandstand and in the beginning it sold only beds.
Shortly after Peter Green opened his Sleep Shop he had the idea to organise a bed race as a fund raiser during the town’s 1959 Carnival Week. The race began outside his Leigh Road premises in Eastleigh. The event was also filmed by Movietone News and shown as a newsreel clip across the whole nation.
In the mid-sixties Peter Green took over a huge property on the corner of Southampton Road and Factory Road. The building had previously been a dairy, a dog biscuit factory, but with a few modifications Peter Green turned it into Hampshire’s largest ‘Walk Round Showrooms.’ Peter Green’s impressive store was opened by Mayor of Eastleigh in 1966.
In 1976 the town put forward plans to build a new covered shopping center, involving the redevelopment of the Peter Green site on Southampton Road. A decision was made to move the company to a larger, newer premisses on School Lane in Chandlers Ford.
Peter Green’s giant new store was much celebrated, so much so that it seemed only fitting that it should be opened by Christopher Greener, Britain’s tallest man at that time. From its humble beginnings, the business had by now become one of the largest independent household furnishers in the South of England.
Peter Green has been trading from the Chandlers Ford showrooms ever since the ‘big move,’ providing furniture and flooring to customers throughout the South Coast. Today, Peter Green customers can expect the same loyalty to quality, value and service as those laid down by its founder over 60 years ago, combined with the latest in style, design and technology that the industry has to offer.
