Axminster Carpets

Carpets with a Royal Tradition

Impressed by a large Turkish carpet he saw in London, Axminster Carpet's Founder, Thomas Whitney, used his skills as a weaver in his West Country workshop to work out how to produce a product of similar quality. After several months he completed his first carpet on midsummer's day 1755.

Thomas Whitney's carpets gained in popularity with Englands's wealthy aristocrats, gracing the floors of their country homes and town houses. King George III and Queen Charlotte, who visited the factory, were among the prestigious customers served by Whitney in those days.

Axminster Carpets have featured in the Brighton Royal Pavilion, Saltram House, Warwick Castle, Chatworth House and in the Sultan of  Turkey's own Palace!

In the 183o's a disastrous fire destroyed all of the factory's weaving looms and the company fell into disrepair for many years until - just by chance - a carpet manufacturer called Harry Dutfield ran into a vicar from the West Country on a train journey. The vicar told him that carpets had not been made in Axminster for a while. A germ of an idea was born in Dutfield's mind and in 1937 the decision was taken to re-launch carpet manufacturing in the town of Axminster.

This was the renaissance of ‘Axminsters from Axminster’.  Axminster Carpets continue the proud tradition of making the finest carpets in the world. Carpets from Axminster can still be found in royal residences, in some of the finest hotels in the world, in train carriages, on the aircraft of major global airlines and in thousands of discerning homes up and down the country.

Happily, Axminster Carpets is still weaving beautifully designed carpets in the Devonshire town of Axminster for the Royal Household, stately homes, luxury hotels and homes around the world.

We are proud to be a part of Axminster's 250 year old history.
