Don't Slip Up On Your Floors

"Refitting or acquiring a commercial space?

Probably one of the most important things to consider is safe flooring."

Falls and slips caused by the wrong flooring materials are the most common cause of injuries. There are lots of non-slip floor materials to choose from, but they basically fall into four types…

Vinyl flooring either sheet or tile (LVT) is a popular choice because it is budget-friendly, low maintenance and durable. There are many collections that are designed to be slip-resistant. Aesthetically vinyl can be beautiful and can seamlessly mimic other materials such as ceramic tiles, wood, or stone. Vinyl is great in areas that are likely to get wet like entrance ways, doorways, bathrooms, kitchens, locker rooms, bars, and dining rooms.

Carpeting is inherently nonslip and may be your best choice in an area that is to remain dry. It’s warm, soft underfoot and dampens noise.

Ceramic tiles are good in both dry and wet areas. They are durable but a little more difficult to lay. If you want non-slip, choose a ceramic tile that is not glazed and has a little texture. Ceramic tiles can however be noisy, cold, and hard underfoot.

Wood and bamboo create a relaxing ambiance and it looks good albeit a little more expensive. Hardwood and bamboo floors are naturally not slippery because they absorb a moisture and have a little 'tooth'. You can also add a non-slip lacquer finish to make it even safer. Natural wood is not so good in areas that will be exposed to a lot of water.

Barrier matting systems fitted in the doorways will also help to minimise slip accidents caused by wet flooring by absorbing water brought in on people’s shoes. It will also reduce maintenance costs and maintain the appearance of internal floors by reducing the amount of dirt and moisture tracked into the building.

Although no flooring is entirely non-slip, there are methods and standards that determine the slip-ability of a material. In places like communal stairs, examination rooms, changing rooms, schools, commercial kitchens, hospital wards and theatres we would, in most cases, recommend non-stick sheet vinyl. Heat welded seams and cap and coving that extends up the walls which will eliminate dirt collecting crevices. This kind of flooring can be kept super clean Andean be washed regularly.
