Does Your Commercial Flooring Comply With H&S Legislation?

Flooring is an essential element of any building, whether it is a commercial or residential space. It not only adds to the aesthetic appeal but also plays a crucial role in providing comfort, safety, and durability. However, when it comes to choosing the right flooring for a commercial space, there are some significant criteria that need to be considered.

The specifications for commercial and domestic flooring is quite different and lies in the purpose of the space. Commercial spaces such as offices, retail stores, schools, hospitals and restaurants are subjected to heavy traffic, making durability a key factor.

Facilities involving food preparation and production such as restaurants, dairies and commercial kitchens have to meet a rigorous set of standards, as do public areas that are subject to becoming wet such as public locker rooms and bathrooms. Slippery floors create a great hazard and slip and fall accidents can not only be distressing, but costly both in terms of time and money… this is where we can help you make the right choices.

The Health, Safety and Welfare Regulations Act put into action in 1992 states that the floor in a workplace must be suitable for the type of work activity taking place on it to enable employees and customers to move around safely… and it is well worth consulting with a professional team like ours to make sure that you comply.

In August of 2022, a UKCA mark was made mandatory for resilient flooring like LVT. Products of this type sold in the UK are required to bear this mark as this ensures that the product has been third-party tested to particular performance requirements, including mandatory fire testing. We know this all sounds a little complicated but this is where we come in, we can make sure that your flooring is up to standard.

If you are having new flooring fitted in a commercial space it is imperative that you use professional fitters. Poor fitting practices and inferior materials such as adhesives, stair nosings, screeds, carpet grippers, wood sub-floors, door bars and underlays can severely affect the longevity and safety of your floor.
