Retail Furniture - Here Comes the Sun

3rd April 2023

Here comes the sun do do do-do!

Well maybe not quite yet, but it's just around the corner… and this is the ideal time to get your patio ready for the summer months ahead so you can enjoy those open-air cocktail parties and lazy afternoons when the time comes.

Here are a few ideas to help you get things rolling…

A clean sweep: start with clearing the space of all the leaves, wind blown rubbish and cobwebs that have accumulated over the winter. Use an outdoor bristle broom. Then wash down with a hose. If there is a lot of buildup consider a commercial-grade power washer… but don’t be tempted to power wash your stained wood furniture, only patio stones, brick and concrete.

Refresh your outdoor furniture: check that your furniture is still safe to use after the rigours of the winter months.  Revive wood like teak, cedar and acacia with a coat of teak cleaner which will brighten a greying finish. Wash your table tops and metal furniture and scrub plastics and composites pieces with a solution of liquid dish soap and water.

Spice it up: To freshen your outdoor look shop for throws and cushions to add comfort, colour and texture.  Opt for neutral colours that will blend with the outdoors or add a little calypso with some bright colors and fun patterns.

Grill prep: Remove cobwebs and leaves. Clean grates with a stiff wire brush. Purchase a canvas grill cover to protected it when it is not in use.

On the side: provide tables for drinks and food. A freshly mixed cocktail or a chilled glass of Sauvignon Blanc deserves to sit on a side table with distinction. You can however purchase fancy stools that can double up as a table when needed.

Flower power: A patio wouldn’t be a patio without flowers. This is the best time of year to mulch your planters, pots and containers to discourage weeds and keep your plants hydrated. Plant the old flavourites such as pansies, marigolds, lobelia and petunias for colour and use cacti and succulents for texture and greenery.

Buying furniture: Now is the ideal time to shop for outdoor furniture while there is plenty of stock in the stores. Rattan is still in vogue this season in either a mid-grey or dark espresso. Buy individual chairs or a corner grouping for cosy conversation. Arrange around a fire pit on cooler evenings. Outdoor dining tables and chairs can be purchased either to match or in a contrasting style. Be aware that a round table is more conducive to conversation than a square.

In the shade: It’s great to get all that fresh air and sunshine filling your body with wellbeing and lots of vitamin D… but we all know you can over do it. Shaded spots provide respite from the sun. Create shade with a stylish umbrella  or consider integrating a gazebo into your patio’s scheme.
