When it comes to counting sheep… you need to count on quality sleep!

We all know that unlocking the ability to sleep better is the key to good health. If you get the right bed you are more than halfway there… but I think you will agree that choosing a bed is no easy task?

But relax! These few simple tips can start you off in the right direction.

Seeing is believing...

Visit a bed store… choosing a bed is not a job that you should do online. At a bed store you will see a whole host of styles, shapes and colours and you will have a knowledgeable sales consultant to hand who will walk you through the process.

How much is too much…

By all means have a look online first to get a little idea of prices before you go on the hunt. If you haven’t bought a bed in a long while then beds may cost a little more than you might expect. Decide what your budget is and stick to it and don’t let a sales person push you up. That having been said you need to set your price at the best you can afford, particularly if you are suffering from sleep problems.

Don’t be shy…

The most important thing you need to do is take you shoes and jacket off and try the bed out in the store. Don’t just lie on you back as if you are in a coffin…move around, assume your favourite sleeping positions. Don’t be embarrassed, you sales consultant wants you to do this so they can better guide you and answer your questions.

Which one would Goldilocks want?…

Your bed is the most used item in your home, think about how long you spend in it, really! It is well worth spending time making a meaningful decision, the benefits of investing time now are potentially years of restful, restorative sleep! Beds come in all comfort levels from ultra soft right through to extremely firm. Although there are some general rules of thumb as to which might be best…to our mind there is no right or wrong when it comes to what you choose. It all boils down to what feels “just right” for you.

It’s all a matter of size…

Regardless of whether a bed is labeled firm or soft it it could feel wildly different depending on your size. A soft bed will feel harder to a person with a small frame and the same bed will feel softer to a bigger person. This is why it is necessary to try them out before you buy.

Bring the other half…

If you are a couple, make sure that you both try out the bed you like… at the same time not independently! Don’t make the mistake of both going along to the store and trying it separately because if there is a big disparity in size you could end up rolling towards the heavier partner and be a little too closer than you would like to be… all night!

Spread out…

If you have a have a big enough bedroom then opt for a kingsize or ‘superking’ bed – the extra room will be always appreciated later on.

If you want to understand the technical details about what is inside a bed you can book an appointment with a consultant at your local bed store. After asking just a few qualifying questions, they should be able to identify several appropriate models at different price points. A good consultant should then wander off and give you time to try the beds out alone! Maybe they can dim the lights a little so that you can get comfy… because at the end of the end of the day if it doesn’t feel good its probably not good for you.

A word of warning!  If you try out a bed in a quiet corner of a store just let someone know you are there. We had one customer fall asleep and we only just found them at the end of the day when we were turning the lights off in that area! Needless to say he bought the bed!

Now that’s comfort for you!
