Peter Green Heritage
Peter Green established his famous furniture business in Eastleigh with his wife Norah in 1956. He may have had only £150 capital but his entrepreneurial zeal and years of experience in the industry would make the Peter Green Group a shining success story. Now, more than fifty years later, the company is recognised as one of the South of England’s largest independent furniture retailers.
In the beginning Peter sold beds in the daytime and delivered them in the evening, while his wife Norah fulfilled all the administrative duties. Gradually as demand increased Peter widened his product range before later opening a small carpet shop. The business grew steadily from these tiny beginnings until 1966, with three branches, when Peter Green acquired his first ‘Walk Around Showrooms Furniture and Carpets Store’.
When Peter Green died suddenly in 1980 his wife Norah became Company Chairperson and Tim Maguire who joined the firm in 1972 became Managing Director. The company came through the recession which followed and by 1982 turnover had increased by a third. Many changes were made; fitted kitchens and bedrooms would become popular and there would be a thriving Contracts division which would serve customers as far away as Gambia.
In 1985 came the move from its long–established base in Southampton Road and the grand opening of a superstore in School Lane, Chandlers Ford. Colin Cross instigated an ambitious expansion and refurbishment programme upon his appointment as Managing Director in 1995 and has overseen the opening of a second store in Reading.
Today Peter Green remains one of the South's premier retail outlets and through continuous innovation and development, has not only adapted to the changing trends throughout the years, but has also been at the forefront of them. Much has changed since the company's inception, but Peter Green's guiding principles of quality, service and value are still paramount today.
